And sometimes a special moment seizes you. Traveling with a sketchbook and pen everywhere I go, sometimes allows you to seize a special moment. The open courtyard invites people looking for a respite from the cold outside. The Fisherman’s Bastion in the royal city of Buda served as the model for Disney’s logo. I don’t often draw just buildings, but sometimes inanimate objects have character and strength, stories to tell and stories to hide. With a surfing lesson ahead of me, I snuck in time for sneaky art at the Prana Cafe, which serves the most delicious food in Goa. People greet the morning in different ways. Had to be quick to capture the essentials, and that’s an important lesson too. It fascinated me to share their life for these brief moments, thanks to the traffic light. I sat with a coffee inside Barnes & Nobles, looking at people stopping at the intersection. Ten seconds, maybe fifteen, maybe half a minute. On Day 2 of #30DaysOfChicago, I found beauty at a traffic light. You can see people at each level, crossing each other’s lives, clueless about their participation in making beauty in serendipity. At a glance, I liked the different levels visible to me at once. There’s always more on my Instagram page, including videos and stories. I was introduced to the wonderful, globe-spanning #UrbanSketching community, thousands of addicts around the world looking for beauty, creating art out of obsession. SneakyArt became an addiction – to finding beauty no one else can see yet. I did not expect to complete the 30 days, but I did, and then I did more and more. No erasing, no faint lines, no half-measures. To climb a steeper learning curve, the pencil in my bag was replaced by an ink pen. I chased beauty where I saw it, and the process of drawing these beautiful things demonstrated what I found beautiful about them. I tasked myself with 30 straight days of #sneakyart, every day a different part of the great city of Chicago. SNEAKYART began with me going out every day to look for beautiful things. But when I quit my day-job (PhD researcher) to become a full-time writer/cartoonist, I knew the task finally had to be undertaken. To LEARN ART.Īfter drawing close to 300 stick-figure comics for 5 years, I was convinced I was never going to be good at art.

It began as a way to teach myself how to draw. I find sneaky spots in public places – cafes, bars, outdoors – and draw ordinary people doing ordinary things. SNEAKY ART is a project to show beauty in everyday urban life.
